The first three chapters of Ulysses are situated in the area covered in this print. Much of the first chapter occurs in the Martello (Joyce’s ) Tower in Sandycove.The second chapter is set in Summercove in Killiney, and in the third chapter Stephen Dedalus walks along Sandymount strand (top left). References to the text of Ulysses, places, ideas and historical events include Bloom and Gerty Mac Dowell on the strand, the Star of the Sea Church, the fireworks, Poolbeg Lighthouse, Poolbeg Power Station, the map of Sandycove, Bray, Killiney, Sorrento Terrace, Dalkey, Leopardstown Racecourse, Dun Laoghaire Harbour (formerly Kingstown), the trainline and DART route from Irishtown to Bray, the Royal Dublin Society, University College Dublin, Donnybrook, the Mailboat, and scenes from Edwardian Dublin.
